The defendant pleaded guilty to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

A man who contaminated candy with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offenses against two young males aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and a grown-up became sick at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one particular crime he was accused of, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody before a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he managed.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the man had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had concerns in summer 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "In the summer" his family member had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated items including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were located, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his suspicions.

She said the man went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not responded by that point," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, previously told that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.

The legal representative explained the minors were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the law enforcement again.

She stated the man then played the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
