Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
