Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important political figure said the incident left him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
